History of Dalt Vila.
The best way to visit its small and sloping streets is on foot and with comfortable and resistant shoes. Through these cobbled streets you reach the highest point where you can enjoy stunning views through the openings of the bastions and its esplanades (Dalt Vila means high city). The main door, or Portal de Ses Taules, flanked by two Roman statues, receives us majestically after climbing a slope and passing a drawbridge. From there you pass to a cobblestone patio that is the anteroom of the Plaza de Vila or main square.
The entrance to the Portal Nou is not so steep and invites you to a comfortable walk. Perhaps you will see Ibizan women entering their houses in Catalan Gothic style to perform their daily tasks.
Its large wooden portals allow you to take a look inside, often decorated, to the private chapel and the majestic staircase. The souvenir shops and art galleries are a surprise because you can admire works by local artists and artisans.
One of the most spectacular hotels in Ibiza, La Torre del Canónigo, with direct views of the harbor and the nearby castle, is located in Dalt Vila, as well as the renowned Mirador de Dalt Vila establishment in front of the Town Hall.
There are a lot of top-notch restaurants in Dalt Vila. Dining by candlelight in a medieval neighborhood under the stars of the Mediterranean – can you imagine something more romantic?
From the bastions of the fort you have a wonderful view over the city, especially if you go up to the square of the cathedral, which is dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows, patron saint of Ibiza, (although in Ibiza almost never snows!). Below are the red-tiled domes of the church of Santo Domingo (16th century) and further to the left is the main square of the city, Vara de Rey. In the middle there is a statue dedicated to the Ibizan general of the same name who fought in the war in Cuba.
In the Plaza de la Catedral there is the Archaeological Museum of Ibiza, with many important remains from the time when Carthage dominated the Mediterranean. Very interesting is also the visit to the museum of Puig des Molins where you can appreciate ancient Punic tombs and the best collection of Punic remains in the world, (many of which have been found here!)
It has been discovered (in 2002) a room that concealed an exit from the castle of Ibiza in Dalt Vila, full of pottery, armament and other objects of daily use on the island from the time of the Phoenicians until the same century XIII.
The hall connected 2 towers of the castle during the Arab occupation of the island and was supposedly used as a means of escape when the population suffered attacks. It was customary to fill that room with dirt to block the entrance to the attacking attackers. The theory says that the victory of the Christian knights from the peninsula took this room to oblivion until its recent discovery. The objects have been preserved wonderfully well and are giving valuable information to archaeologists about life in the Ibiza of the time.
